While America grapples with the devastating effects of widespread substance abuse and overdose rates, it must be considered where exactly many of these illicit drugs come from. Just below the border, an underground conglomeration of organized crime continues to prop up these occurrences at the expense of hard-working people. Drug cartels are not a new occurrence, but there are two that continue to take center stage. We are taking a deep dive into the war of the Sinaloa Cartel vs. CJNG and how these groups continue to operate.
How the Sinaloa Cartel Rules
The title of leader of the Sinaloa cartel is not restricted to a single person. Although its most infamous example, El Chapo, is alive and held in a US prison for a life sentence, four factions of the cartel continue to operate under a variety of figures, a number of which are related to El Chapo. Although these factions operate with different forms of leadership, they are still held to similar standards regarding their methods of extortion and subsequent trafficking.
While it is a decades-old crime group, one which has effectively planted its reach through violence and intimidation, it has fostered a reputation for its moderation and predictability. It is methodical with its use of physical force, and many of its members have adopted a reputation as civilized criminals.
How the CJNG Operates
Following the death of the Sinaloa drug lord Ignacio Coronel Villarreal in 2010, the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) was formed. Its leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes (aka “El Mencho”), is currently in the ranks of one of the most wanted drug lords in the world. It operates with many of the same crimes, particularly in trafficking addictive substances like heroin and cocaine.
A key distinction between CJNG and Sinaloa is the former’s reliance on brutality, usage of dramatic videos as propaganda flaunting said brutality, and even instances of public executions and mass violence. Sinaloa relies on its history and reputation to maintain some semblance of favor amongst those it subjugates, while CJNG seeks to do so through fear and intimidation.
What Is the Takeaway?
Both of these groups have terrorized and intimated both the Mexican people and its government for a number of years. Both are driven by greed and a lust for power, control, and money. The activities of both cartels have amplified the severity of the war on drugs in America, and to this day, authorities struggle to keep up with the tactics and operations used.
The bloody realities of where substances like cocaine and heroin are derived from are not commonly considered by the average user. When an addiction forms, what typically matters most is how more of the drug can be obtained. This effectively repeats the cycle of violence, greed, and devastation. The destructive market for these substances remains rampant so long as addictions require more of what it is selling.
